“…Chang and Iwase were the first to report the decline of serum AMH levels after excision of endometrioma(s), especially in bilateral cases [91,92]. Afterwards, numerous other reports confirmed that AMH levels decreased after removal of endometriomas [93][94][95][96], and steeper reductions were observed after bilateral procedures [97,98]. Two systematic reviews evaluating the effect of endometrioma surgery on ovarian reserve as assessed by serum AMH measurement have been published [99,100].…”

“…It may also be performed before in vitro fertilization (IVF) if the diameter of endometrioma is >4 cm [6]. Recently, several clinical studies, including our own [7], have noted the deleterious effect of endometrioma cystectomy on ovarian reserve [8,9,10,11]. Inadvertently, removal of primordial follicles during cystectomy, the inflammation process and thermal tissue damage due to bipolar electrocautery usage are the main causative factors for diminished ovarian reserve, but endometrioma per se may also contribute to the decrement in ovarian reserve [12].…”

“…Recently a systematic review (metaanalysis) of changes in AMH after surgical excision of endometrioma shows 9 of 11 studies documented a statistically significant reduction of serum AMH level after surgery (21) . The two studies failing to document this decrease were published by the same study group (Ercan etal 2010, 2011) (22,23) The studies evaluating serum AMH level serially after surgery documented that this reduction occurred early, being already evident at 1 week after surgery. Thereafter, levels remained stable or mildly recovered (24, 25, and 26) .…”
