“…Bio-based lubricants are widely utilized in a variety of applications such as mining, dredging, shing, forestry, and agriculture hydraulic systems. [9][10][11][12] Efforts are underway by policymakers and the automobile industry to promote electric vehicles (EVs) as a cleaner alternative. However, even electric vehicles currently rely on petroleum-based lubricating oils especially to lubricate drivetrains.…”

“…Ethanol or ethyl alcohol is a substance in the alcohol family that has a variety of uses: it is a clear, colorless, and volatile liquid with the chemical formula C 2 H 5 OH, which has wide applications in various fields in home, industrial, and medical, and is one of the main ingredients of medical alcohol and alcoholic beverages. Ethanol is easily soluble in water and other organic compounds and therefore is used in the manufacture of various materials such as personal care and beauty products, paints, fuels, drugs, and medical disinfectants and is used as a solvent 1,2 . It is used as a solvent, in the synthesis of other organic chemicals, and as an additive to automotive gasoline (forming a mixture known as a gasohol).…”

“…In addition, Costa et al 30 investigated the interaction between lubricating oil and ethanol (5 wt %) and discovered that ethanol increased the thickness of the boundary film of the organic friction modifier, thereby decreasing the boundary friction. Liu et al 31 achieved macroscopic superlubricity with basil seed gel (BSG)−ethanol (1:1), primarily because the mechanical strength of the adsorption layer was enhanced when the ethanol molecules entered the BSG network, and the lubricating film was prevented from being destroyed during the sliding process. In contrast, a recent study by Costa et al 32 using X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) found that the presence of ethanol significantly reduced the concentration of long-chain phosphates, resulting in a decrease in the wear resistance of poly alpha olefin-zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (PAO-ZDDP) lubricants.…”

“…Since ethanol can be used as a biofuel additive, several researchers have examined its effect on friction and wear, whereas petroleum ether and acetone have been the subject of very few comparable studies. Using DFT, Barnette et al investigated the friction and wear behavior of a SiO 2 surface in a 50% humidity and ethanol vapor environment.…”
