Ultra Low Power short range radios: Covering the last mile of the IoT

Abstract: Short Range Radios are predicted to realize a paradigm change by 2020, similar to the revolution of mobile communication, in the nineties. These radios provide the last mile wireless connectivity between "things" and the Internet. They connect your new wearable devices to your smart phone, or enable smart energy monitoring and control in your home.In this paper, we analyze the power breakdown of such new consumer devices operating from small, advanced batteries. It is shown that the wireless connectivity has a… Show more

“…The nodes' power budgets and consumption levels correspond to energy harvesting budgets and ultra-low-power transceivers in [21,22,45]. Unless stated otherwise, we use a power budget of ρ = 10 µW and power consumption levels L = X = 0.5 mW.…”

“…Duty cycling is one way to achieve low (average) power consumption. A duty cycled system spends most of the time in a low-power sleep mode, only briefly waking up to transmit or receive packets in the active mode [1]. The transition from sleep mode to active mode requires starting up the radio circuit blocks, which take some time for settling.…”

“…After XC, the harmonics are suppressed compared to the fundamental signal. 1 In real implementations, n 1 and n 2 will not be completely uncorrelated. This correlated contribution may degrade the performance.…”

“…Recently, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been used in various applications such as building automation, industrial applications, traffic tracking and environmental monitoring. This development was enabled due to the huge advances in wireless communications and digital electronics which were essential to produce low-cost, low-power nodes of WSNs [1].…”
