Ultra‐Broadband and Ultra‐Compact On‐Chip Silicon Polarization Beam Splitter by Using Hetero‐Anisotropic Metamaterials

Abstract: The polarization beam splitter (PBS) is an essential component in the polarization diversity circuit to overcome the strong polarization dependence of silicon nanophotonic devices. Among various PBS structures, the asymmetrical directional couplers (ADCs) are most commonly used due to the best overall performances. However, it is still challenging to realize an on‐chip silicon PBS with a small footprint, low loss, high extinction ratio, and, especially, broad bandwidth, simultaneously. The working bandwidth is… Show more

“…[172] Several PBSs have been realized based on SWGs, [173][174][175] inverse design method, [176] and anisotropyengineered metamaterials. [177,178] The working bandwidth is limited for ADC-based PBSs, as the wavelength shift leads to variations in both the effective index and the coupling strength. A PBS was proposed and demonstrated through "effective MZIs [133] -1.1…”

“…We have proposed an MMI with tilted SWG segments that acts polarization splitter covering a 130 nm bandwidth using a constant minimum feature size of 110 nm [17], [18]. Using a "mixed" anisotropy approach a polarization splitter covering more than 200nm with a minimum feature size of 65 nm has been recently demonstrated [19].…”
