Selbstverst~ndlich konnte dies nur durch Aufz~hlung der wesentlichen Bestandtheile einer Zelle gesehehen. Doch eben die Frage, ob das Protoplasma, die Zellmembran oder der Kern das Wesen der Zelle ausmachen, blieb lange Zeit hindurch trotz eingehenden Studiums namhafter Forscher (Schwann, Virchow, Bischoff, KSlliker, Dujardin, Schulze, Brficke u. s. w.) unaufgekl'~rt, da bei den verschiedenartigsten Zellen bald dieser, bald jener Bestandtheil pri~valirte oder vermisst wurde. Viele ahnten es zwar, dass im Zellleben der Kern das Wesentliche sei, doch die Bedenken, die andererseits hiegegen zu Felde gefiihrt wurden, konnten blos durch die Erkenntniss und Beweisfiihrung dessert beseitigt werden, dass eben dem Kerne beim Befruchtungs-und Vermehrungsprozesse der organischen Wesen die Hauptrolle zukomme. So gelangte nun der Kern zu seinem Rechte und heute gilt es als feststehend, dass der Kern --als wesentlichster Bestandtheil der Zelles~mmtliche Umwandlungsprozesse der Thiere und Pfianzen vermittelt.
