Show more

“…BaBiO 3 was synthesized for the first time in 1963 44 and was identified as a perovskite but it was hard to precisely determine the right structure: rhombohedral, orthorhombic, monoclinic or triclinic symmetries were reported by various groups 3,45,46 . It was finally established that at room temperature and ambient pressure the structure is monoclinic (C12m1) - Fig.…”

“…In particular, the controversy regarding BaBiO , whether it is a bismuthate(IV) or a Bi(III/V) mixed-valent phase with two distinguishable bismuth sites, is an impressive example for this. First reports on BaBiO state that it exhibits the perovskite type of structure (11,12,13). Neutron di!raction studies (14) resulted in monoclinic unit cell containing four formula units.…”

“…A similar controversy has existed for BaBiO 3. Some workers (Scholder, Ganter, Glaser & Merz, 1963;Shuvaeva & Fesenko, 1969;Fesenko, Shuvaeva & Gol'tsov, 1972;Venevtsev, 1971) have assumed that the mixed-valent situation Ba2Bia+Bis+o6 pertains. Others (de Hair & Blasse, 1973) have suggested that this compound represents an example of Bi 4+.…”
