Types of indwelling urethral catheters for short-term catheterisation in hospitalised adults

Abstract: Silver alloy-coated catheters were not associated with a statistically significant reduction in symptomatic CAUTI, and are considerably more expensive. Nitrofurazone-impregnated catheters reduced the risk of symptomatic CAUTI and bacteriuria, although the magnitude of reduction was low and hence may not be clinically important. However, they are more expensive than standard catheters. They are also more likely to cause discomfort than standard catheters.

“…Efforts focusing on reducing unsuitable antimicrobial use for CAUTI should be part of an all-inclusive antimicrobial stewardship program. [16,17] Twenty-six trials that considered 12,422 hospitalized adults in 25 parallel group trials, and 27,878 adults in one large cluster-randomized cross-over trial were involved in a systematic review for CAUTI prevention. Given a nearly 70% response in the sample in both years we believe these results provide a reasonable estimate of the use of infection prevention practices by U.S. non-federal hospitals.…”

“…Silver alloy urinary catheters have been shown in some studies to reduce bacteriuria and symptomatic UTI [8][9][10]. However, the evidence for any major difference in terms of frequency of bacterial colonization and symptomatic UTI is still poor [4,11,12]. Silicone is an inert material.…”
