The purpose of this catalogue was to combine the available data from publications, theses, databases, and herbarium specimens from around 120 Herbaria, and colections sampled in Brazilian vegetation during the last 15 years to produce the most complete list, as possible as, of Cyperaceae species for Brazil. We catalogued ca. 1,700 names for 678 species in 42 genera occurring in Brazil. These values represent ca. 15 percent of the species and 40 percent of the genera found in the world. Both subfamilies of Cyperaceae are found in Brazil with Cyperoideae being the most diverse at both generic and specific levels. Although lower species were recorded for the tribes Cryptangieae, Sclerieae, and Trilepideae, these tribes represent a much higher percentage of the world's totals for genera and species. The most diverse genera are Rhynchospora (157 spp.), Cyperus (101 spp.), Scleria (82 spp.) and Eleocharis (69 spp.). Fifteen genera have one species in Brazil, although five of them are monospecific. The most species-rich regions in Brazil are the North and Southeast. There are no genera endemic to Brazil. There are, however, around 200 endemic species, of which 40 are in the genus Rhynchospora. Taxonomic and nomenclatural problems found are pointed under the species. For each catalogued species, the principal synonyms, bibliographic references, distribution within Brazil's five regions, vegetation type, and citation of selected material examined are provided.

Rhynchospora mesoatlanticasp. nov. (Cyperaceae) is described, illustrated, and compared with morphologically similar species. Rhynchospora mesoatlantica is known only from southern Delaware, southeastern Maryland, and southern New Jersey, all within the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.A. It inhabits sunny, wet margins of natural, shallow, nutrient-poor, seasonal ponds of the Coastal Plain. Narrow leaf blades; fruits obpyriform in outline; faces of mature fruits possessing a central, pale, well-demarcated disk; and fruit tubercle margins denticulate for most of their lengths indicate R. mesoatlantica is most similar to R. filifolia and R. harperi. Rhynchospora mesoatlantica is unique in its fruit dimensions, scales intermediate in length between R. filifolia and R. harperi, and relatively long fruit stipe. The NatureServe rank of Critically Imperiled and the IUCN rank of Endangered appear warranted for R. mesoatlantica because only six populations are known to be extant, most quite small and isolated; all populations occur within a small geographic area; populations have declined; and serious threats confront the survival of the species.

Rhynchospora is one of the most species-rich genera of Cyperaceae, comprising c. 400 species in 28 sections. Rhyncospora section Tenues is one of the largest sections and one of the most problematic. Because it is morphologically similar to sections Laevinuces, Luzuliformes and Spermodontes, the characters traditionally used to distinguish section Tenues cannot be reliably used to place species into one of these four sections. These four sections are included in the Psilocarya group of Rhynchospora subgenus Rhynchospora with sections Psilocarya and Dichromena. Previous molecular studies of Rhynchospora indicate that species of the Psilocarya group form a clade and are sister to at least some species of the sections being studied here. Since only 11 of the estimated 41 species in these four sections were included in earlier phylogenetic studies, the relationships among these sections remain unclear. To elucidate these relationships, we conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis for Rhynchospora, based on plastid trnL-F and nuclear ETS and ITS markers, emphasizing species in these four sections. Results show that sections Laevinuces, Spermodontes and Tenues are individually not monophyletic but, grouped together, form a well-supported clade, Rhynchospora section Tenues s.l. Rhynchospora section Luzuliformes is monophyletic but is not a sister clade of section Tenues.
