Two new species of congrogadins (Teleostei; Pseudochromidae), with range extensions for four other species

Abstract

WINTERBOTTOM, R., and RANDALL, J.E. 1994. Two new species of congrogadins (Teleostei; Pseudochromidae), with range extensions for four other species. Can. J. Zool. 72: [750][751][752][753][754][755][756]. Two specimens of a distinctive new species of the congrogadin genus Haliophis were recently collected off the south coast of Oman. This species differs from its congeners in morphometric and meristic characteristics, as well as in its highly contrasted black and white pattern. It is described and compared with the other two species of Haliophis, and a key to the species is given. A range extension for Haliophis guttatus from Aden to the vicinity of Misrat, Oman, is reported. A new species of Halidesmus is described from 13 specimens from the southern Oman coast. It is related to H. thomaseni (which is here reported to reach as far west as Masirah Island, Oman). The new species differs from H. thomaseni in most meristic values, in the form of the snout crest, and in reduced squamation. A key to the species in the genus is provided. Halimuraena shakai, known from the Kw~zulu coast of South Africa and from a single specimen from Mauritius, is here recorded from the Comoro Islands. Blennodesmus scapularis, known from northwestern and northeastern Australia, is here recorded from the vicinity of Phuket, Thailand. WINTERBOTTOM, R., et RANDALL, J.E. 1994. Deux specimens d'une nouvelle espkce distinctive de poisson congrogadine du genre Haliophis ont 6te recueillis rkcemment au large de la c8te sud d'Oman. L'espkce diffkre de ses congknkres par certaines caracteristiques morphomktriques et meristiques, de meme que par sa coloration noire et blanche trks contrastee._L+spkce est dkcrite et comparke B deux autres espkces d'Haliophis et la cle d'identification presentee ici permettra de reconnaitre les espkces. L'aire de repartition connue d'Haliophis guttatus s'etend maintenant d'Aden au voisinage de Misrat, Oman. On trouvera egalement ici la description d'une nouvelle espkce d'Halidesmus dont 13 specimens ont ete prkleves sur la c8te sud d'Oman; l'espkce se rapproche d'H. thomaseni (qu'on peut retrouver aussi loin B l'ouest que dans l'ile de Masirah, Oman). La nouvelle espkce diffkred'H. thomaseni surtout par ses caracteristiques meristiques, par la forme de la crete de son museau et par sa squamosite reduite. Une cl6 des espkces du genre est presentee ici. Halimuraena shakai, connu sur la c8te du Kwazulu en Afrique du Sud et dont un seul specimen a 6te trouve dans l'ile Maurice, a ete retrouvk dans les Comores. Blennodesmus scapularis, qui habite le nord-ouest et le nord-est de l'Australie, a et6 trouvk au voisinage de Phuket, Thailande.[Traduit par la Redaction]
