Two new species of congrogadins (Teleostei; Pseudochromidae), with range extensions for four other species

Abstract: WINTERBOTTOM, R., and RANDALL, J.E. 1994. Two new species of congrogadins (Teleostei; Pseudochromidae), with range extensions for four other species. Can. J. Zool. 72: [750][751][752][753][754][755][756]. Two specimens of a distinctive new species of the congrogadin genus Haliophis were recently collected off the south coast of Oman. “…The groups of fishes used in this analysis are: Plagiotremus Gill (Smith‐Vaniz, 1976); the clade formed by Congogadus Günther and Halimuraena Smith (after Godkin & Winterbottom, 1985); Encheliophis Müller (Markle & Olney, 1990); Acanthoclininae ( Acanthoclinus Jenyns + Belonopterygion McCulloch + Beliops Hardy + Acanthoplesiops Regan) (Smith‐Vaniz & Johnson, 1990); Trimmaton Winterbottom & Emery (Winterbottom, 1990); Plesiops Oken (Mooi, 1995); Halidesmus Günther (Winterbottom & Randall, 1994) and Haliophis Rüppell (Winterbottom & Randall, 1994). To these we added the coral genera Acropora Oken (Wallace et al ., 1991); Coscinarea Milne Edwards & Haime and Symphyllia Milne Edwards & Haime (Pandolfi, 1992); and Fungia Lamarck (Hoeksema, 1993).…”

“…12B-E; state 1). Posterior otic pores are present in Assiculus, Assiculoides and anisochromines, and are either present (Halidesmus, Halimuraenoides and Congrogadus (Congrogadus)) or absent (Rusichthys, Haliophis, Natalichthys, Blennodesmus, Halimuraena and Congrogadus (Congrogadoides)) in congrogadines (Winterbottom, 1986(Winterbottom, , 1996Winterbottom & Randall, 1994). The lack of posterior otic pores is regarded as apomorphic within the Pseudoplesiopinae.…”
