Two New Records of Harpacticoid Copepods for Turkish Inland Waters (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) Phyllognathopus Viguieri (Maupas, 1892) and Leptocaris Brevicornis (Van Douwe, 1904)

Abstract: The harpacticoid copepods, Phyllognathopus viguieri (Maupas, 1892) and Leptocaris brevicornis (Van Douwe, 1904) are reported for the first time from, respectively, the lakes Golbasi and Golkent. This is the first record of these two species for inland waters of Turkey. Males and females of Phyllognathopus viguieri and Leptocaris brevicornis were consistently found during two sampling periods. In addition, 13 other species of copepods species were found in the two lakes.

“…Following Borutsky (1964), who ascribed taxonomic relevance to the position of the longest seta on the exopod (external lobe) of the female's fifth leg, the specimens observed belong indeed to Phyllognathopus viguieri. These specimens are also in agreement with the descriptions of specimens from France by Dussart (1966, in Dussart, 1967, from New Zealand by Barclay (1969), and from Turkey by Bozkurt (2007). The latter author illustrated the female P5 with the external lobe bearing the longest seta in the second position (from the external margin), but that seems to be a misplacement in the drawing.…”

“…Caudal rami roughly as long as wide with two apical setae which have swollen bases (fig. 3A); in the only male observed, the apical setae are regular as previously pointed out by Barclay (1969) and Bozkurt (2007). First to third pair of swimming legs (P1-P3) with 3-segmented endopods and 3-segmented exopods ( fig.…”

“…The harpacticoid copepod Phyllognathopus viguieri (Maupas, 1892) has been reported from most continents and has been collected from a vast variety of freshwater habitats (Reid 2001; Glatzel and Königshoff 2005; Bozkurt 2007). Behavioural observations as well as morphological and genetic studies may help in addressing the question whether the different populations can be considered belonging to a single species (see Ganz and Burton 1995; Lee 2000).…”
