Two new records for Bromeliaceae in the central-west region of Brazil: Vriesea friburgensis and Tillandsia polystachia

Abstract: This study presents the first records of Vriesea friburgensis and Tillandsia polystachia for the central-west region of Brazil. The two species were found in gallery forests of the National Forest of Brasília, Distrito Federal. This conservation unit is located in the core region of the Cerrado domain. This finding extends the number of species of flora of this locality and of the Central-west Region, and also increases the area of distribution of the two species, previously restricted to the northeast, southe… Show more

“…Our discovery of the first records of five species of Tillandsia in Bahia is an important addition to the knowledge of these species and also contributes data useful towards the conservation biogeographic study of these plants (Versieux et al 2013;Lima and Soares-Silva 2016). These species were probably overlooked in Bahia as a consequence of the collection gaps in the state, which is the fifth largest state by area in Brazil.…”

“…New records of Bromeliaceae from states of Brazil and other countries have been published (Versieux et al 2013;Büneker et al 2015;Lima andSoares-Silva 2016, Guarçoni et al 2018), and include first reports of Tillandsia species from the states of Rio Grande do Sul (Büneker et al 2015), Maranhão (Guarçoni et al 2018), and Paraná (Kremer 2011) and from the Central-west region (Lima and Soares-Silva 2016). However, there are no recently published data for Bahia.…”

“…Lankesterella caespitosa and E. actinosophila have been collected in the Cerrado at the same location in São Our new record of E. actinosophila from the Center-West region reveals that even in well-sampled areas such as Distrito Federal, it is still possible to find unreported species, for example, the two conspicuous bromeliads Vriesea friburgensis Mez. and Tillandsia polystachia (L.) L. (Lima and Soares-Silva 2016). Other records in well-sampled areas worth mentioning include that of E. lobata Chiron & V.P.…”

“…We have scarce (or none) collections in herbaria or other museum repositories from these forest sites of eastern Buenos Aires. There are many works reporting new findings of bromeliads in poorly explored regions in south Brazil and northern Argentina (e.g., Magalhaes et al 2014;Miyamoto & Tardivo 2014;Büneker et al 2015;Lima & Soares-Silva 2016;Guarçoni et al 2018). However, the southern localities here reported, and their surroundings were explored in detail by the botanist A.L.…”
