Two new Kirschsteiniothelia species with Dendryphiopsis anamorphs cluster in Kirschsteiniotheliaceae fam. nov.

Abstract: Two new Kirschsteiniothelia species are proposed in this study; both were collected on decaying wood from Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces in northern Thailand. The taxa were isolated and the morphological characters are described and illustrated. ITS, LSU and SSU combined sequence analysis showed taxa of Kirschsteiniothelia separating into three lineages: (i) K. elaterascus grouped within Morosphaeriaceae (Pleosporales); (ii) K. maritima clustered with Mytilinidion spp. as a sister group in the Mytilinidia… Show more

“…Rossman (1978) suggested that Puttemansia was similar to Podonectria and Tubeufia in Tubeufiaceae having bright, fleshy ascomata, bitunicate asci and multi-septate ascospores (Barr 1980). Rossman (1987) provided detailed descriptions of six species and accepted them in Tubeufiaceae, with in freshwater, marine, or terrestrial environments, and a large number, especially as asexual states, are pathogens on living plants Boonmee et al 2012;Liu et al 2012). Characteristics include perithecial ascomata usually with distinct ostioles, abundant pseudoparaphyses, pedicellate, cylindro-clavate asci usually with distinct ocular chambers and various ascospore types.…”

“…These families include Aliquandostipitaceae (Inderbitzin et al 2001), Amniculicolaceae (Zhang et al 2008(Zhang et al , 2009a, Lentitheciaceae (Zhang et al 2009b, c), Lindgomycetaceae , Morosphaeriaceae , Boonmee et al 2012 and Natipusillaceae (Raja et al 2012). Although molecular sequence data has provided phylogenetic placements for numerous freshwater Dothideomycetes, a number of Dothideomycetes from freshwater habitats occur as singletons and remain incertae sedis ).…”

“…The type species of Kirschsteiniothelia, K. aethiops, is congeneric with the type species of Dendryphiopsis, D. atra, as demonstrated by the molecular phylogeny presented in Boonmee et al (2012). Both species have been regarded as having various synonyms, but it now seems likely that this represents a species complex.…”

“…cons. Sequenced epitypes may be required to resolve the connections at the species level, as Boonmee et al (2012) shows some material named as K. aethiops and D. atra to be distinct but congeneric species. Kirschsteiniothelia currently includes 17 species, with some recently added by Chen & Hsieh (2004), and Wang et al (2004).…”
