Tubeufiales, ord. nov., integrating sexual and asexual generic names

Abstract: Tubeufiaceae is based on the generic type Tubeufia, which is characterized by superficial, oval and bright ascomata, bitunicate asci, mostly long fusiform to filiform, transeptate ascospores and hyphomycetous asexual states with helicosporous conidia. Most species in this family are saprobic on terrestrial woody substrates and some are aquatic. Their distinct morphology as well as combined LSU, SSU and TEF1 sequence analysis show that Tubeufiaceae should be accommodated in a new order Tubeufiales, which is int… Show more

“…This shows that molecular systematics is vital in classification of fungi related to the Tubeufiaceae. Boonmee et al (2014) will introduce the order Tubeufiales which is strongly supported by molecular data as well as ecological and morphological data; this includes a distinct habitat, and helicosporous asexual morphs. Although Wiesneriomyces species are related to the Tubeufiales and Patellariales, it is a new lineage within the Dothideomycetes rather than a subgroup of those two orders.…”

“…Further collections are required, perhaps on more woody substrata, to yield the sexual stage. The family is well placed in the Dothideomycetes with strong bootstrap support and grouping with the order Tubeufiales, an order with many asexual genera (Boonmee et al 2014).…”

“…In the phylogenetic tree of ITS, Helicocentralis within the Leotiomycetes is distant from the genus Helicodendron (H. paradoxum as the type species, H. microsporum); although it shares some morphological characteristics, such as conidiophores micronematous or s e m i -m a c r o n e m a t o u s , a n d m o n o n e m a t o u s , a n d conidiogenous cells monoblastic, integrated, terminal, determinate, cylindrical and conidia three-dimensionally coiled (Fisher and Webster 1983; Table 3). Although Helicocentralis resembles Helicoma, Helicoma was not monophyletic and most species clustered with Helicomyces and Helicosporium in the Tubeufiaceae (Tubeufiales) based on molecular data Berbee 2006, 2010;Boonmee et al 2011Boonmee et al , 2014. Helicocentralis differs from other Helicoma species by having smooth-walled conidia, hyaline conidiophores and conidia that are circinate, tightly coiled, centrifugally coiled and hyaline Zhao et al 2007; Table 3).…”

“…Zalerion, Cumulospora), occurring on a variety of substrata (leaf litter, wood) and in terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats. Sexual morphs of Tubeufiales (Dothideomycetes) include many genera with helicoid conidia: Acanthohelicospora, Chlamydotubeufia, Neoacanthostigma, and Thaxteriella (Boonmee et al 2014). Likewise, Leotiomycetes includes taxa with helicoid conidia and sexual morphs in Mollisia and Hymenoscyphus ( Helicodendron giganteum and H. paradoxum, respectively; Fisher and Webster 1983).…”

“…We have been studying the various members of Dothideomycetes, with the intention to provide a natural classification of this class based on both morphology and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses (Hyde et al 2013;Boonmee et al 2014;Thambugala et al 2014Thambugala et al , 2015Wijayawardene et al 2014Wijayawardene et al , 2016Ariyawansa et al 2015a;Liu et al 2015;Phookamsak et al 2015;Wanasinghe et al 2015).
