Two Cases of Desmoplastic Trichoepithelioma

Abstract: Desmoplastic trichoepithelioma is a rare tumor that usually exhibits the distinct clinical features of a solitary granuloma annulare-like growth on the face. We experienced two cases of desmoplastic trichoepithelioma, one of which showed unusual clinical features and the other of which was a typical case. The first case was a 20-year-old female who presented with a five year history of a solitary yellowish nodule, 5 mm in diameter, centrally between the eyebrows. There was no central dimple or elevated border.… Show more

“…Two malignant tumours were reported in our study. The present study shows nodular hidradenoma as the predominant tumour similar to Radhika K et al, 5 and trichoepithelioma 6 is the next common tumour. Trichoepitheliomas were the most common tumours in other studies.…”

“…Clinically, however, this benign neoplasm is typically easier to differentiate from a microcystic adnexal carcinoma than is sclerosing basal cell carcinoma. The stereotypical presentation of a desmoplastic trichoepithelioma consists of a small solitary plaque with a central depressed area and elevated borders, 22 in contrast to the larger, firm, pale to yellow plaque or nodule with an average size at presentation of 2 cm in the case of a microcystic adnexal carcinoma 23 . Swanson et al 24 also reported that the majority but not all of their cases of classical and desmoplastic trichoepitheliomas were positive on staining with Ber‐EP4.…”

“…35 Desmoplastic trichoepithelioma (DTE) variant occurs most commonly on the faces of young females. Histologically, it is characterised by narrow, compressed strands of basaloid germinative epithelium, with or without small horn cysts, embedded in densely sclerotic stroma within the upper dermis 36 (fig 6A-C). It is important to differentiate DTE from morphoealike BCC.…”
