Tumor ploidy as a risk factor for disease recurrence and short survival in surgically‐treated dukes' B2 colon cancer patients

Abstract: The risk factors for colon cancer recurrence following a curative intent surgery include the presence of metastatic disease, the tumor location and size, number of positive lymph nodes, the presence of adhesions, perforation, bowel obstruction, depth of invasion, histological grade, percentage of S-phase content, and cell kinetic profile. The DNA content of colon cancers in 20 Dukes' B2 patients in follow-up evaluation at our center, who relapsed, either locally or systemically following surgical treatment was … Show more

“…In these studies, survival data tables or curves at fiveyear follow-up were not available or absolute death numbers were available but the group size was not determined at the beginning of follow-up or after five years. There were four 79-82 duplicate reports; the original publications 22,31,40,63 were included because we observed no differences between the original publication and the duplicated one. Two studies were excluded 83,84 because of inaccurate grouping size data.…”

“…27 However, these factors usually need additional and expensive examination and have not been used in further clinical studies. Although the literature provides some information about prognostic factors, such as pT3 classification, 20 perineural invasion, 21 tumor necrosis, 22 and type of invasive front, 23 which are also examined by the hematoxylin and eosin slides, they had no influence on prognosis in the present study.…”

“…When considering OS, DSS, and RFS together, 9 of 17 (52.9 %) studies stated a significant difference in survival with aneuploid tumors implying a worse prognosis [16,17,34,35,62,68,36,37,69]. In six studies, a multivariate analysis for OS was performed and only three described statistical significance [16,34,68].…”
