Trends of skin cancer incidence in 6 geographical regions of the Islamic Republic of Iran, 2000-2005

Abstract: Data about the incidence of skin cancer in the Islamic Republic of Iran are lacking. This study investigated trends in the incidence of skin cancer (ICD-10 category C44, other malignant neoplasms of skin) in 6 regions using data from the Iranian cancer registry from 2000 to 2005. The standardized incidence rates in each year were calculated by the direct method using the standard World Health Organization population and a Poisson regression model was applied to analyse trends. Over the study period, 30 701 cas… Show more

“…According to the Iranian cancer registration system, coverage of registry had an increasing trend particularly from 2004 to 2005. Similar trends of the incidence during this period was observed in skin ( 46 ) andgastric ( 47 , 48 )cancers, indicating that a part of rising in the incidence is due to changing in cancer registry system and developmental problems. Therefore, the process of cancer registration system ( 49 ) should be considered in the interpretation of the results in all cancer researches in Iran‏.…”

“…They observed a definite male predominance. [3] On the other hand, Pinedo et al reported a higher proportion of cases in women (58.6%) as compared to men (41.4%). [4] Bahamdan and Morad found that the mean age was 61.0 years with a male: female ratio of 1.6:1.…”

“…[1] The incidence of skin tumors varies geographically and is relatively well documented for malignant neoplasms like keratinocytic tumors {squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), and basal cell carcinomas (BCC)} and melanomas in different studies. [2][3][4][5][6] However, the frequency of occurrence of various benign skin tumors and other malignant skin tumors is poorly documented. Hence, this study was undertaken with the aim of evaluating the spectrum of all the benign as well as malignant neoplasms of skin and subcutis based on histopathological diagnosis using the International classification of World health Organization (WHO).…”

“…Age-standardized incidence rates of NMSC in Serbia have increased more than 1.5-fold from 1999 to 2015 and our results show a continuously increasing incidence rate. The continuously increasing incidence rates of NMSC were also recorded in Australia (4), New Zeland (36), the United States (6), Canada (37), Asia (38,39) and in European countries: Netherlands (40), Denmark (41), Italy (42) and Switzerland (43). Explanations for this increasing incidence rates could be several factors.…”
