Trends in Lightweight Automotive Materials for Improving Fuel Efficiency and Reducing Carbon Emissions

Abstract: Depletion of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases is an essential issue in the development of the automotive industry. From the design stage, material selection becomes the most crucial factor. Therefore, this article discusses the development of lightweight automotive materials for increasing fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Material reliability is assessed by how much weight reduction can be achieved, production costs, safety and durability. Ferro materials (mild steel, High Strength Steel, and Ad… Show more

“…Additionally, lightweight materials reduce transportation energy, contributing to lower carbon emissions. Integrating eco-friendly materials with reduced environmental footprints can significantly mitigate the sector's environmental impact (Refiadi, Aisyah, & Siregar, 2019). Manufacturers can contribute to a circular economy and minimize waste by choosing biodegradable, recyclable, or possessing a smaller carbon footprint (StartUS, 2023).…”

“…Non-wood lignocellulose materials, also known as natural fibers are being studied for use as potential environmentally friendly composites that reduce or replace synthetic fibers and polymers [1]. The advantages of using natural fibers include their highly specific properties, resource abundance, minimized CO2 emission, and low-cost processes [3], [4], [5]. Another advantage is carbon neutrality, implying a balance between emitting and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere in carbon sinks [2].…”

“…This means the car or bus body building industry which specializes in the manufacturing of public passenger vehicle bodies needs greater attention. This is mostly related to the assurance of quality in the design and construction processes in order to guarantee the safety of passengers and also provide light weight [1], [2]. It is, however, important to note that the different kinds of materials usually applied to ensure safety and lightweight normally present challenges in the process of joining and welding [3].…”
