Treatment of axillary osmidrosis: a comparison between subcutaneous laser and superficial liposuction curettage

Abstract: Superficial liposuction with curettage provides more effective treatment with higher complication rates and is possibly suitable for severe patients. For mild-to-moderate osmidrosis, or preferring a better cosmetic result or short recovery, subcutaneous laser could be applied.

“…The latter is inserted through the incisions and causes direct thermal damage to the sweat gland coils in the subcutis. Wavelengths employed include 924, 975, 1,064, and 1,444 nm . Use of the laser fiber alone without additional suction and curettage seems to have little effect and may only be suitable for mild hyperhidrosis .…”

“…1 To decrease the quantity or secretion of sweat glands, various treatment modalities have been developed, such as the local injection of botulinum toxin A, the surgical excision of sweat glands, tumescent sweat gland suction curettage, and subcutaneous laser treatment. [2][3][4] To date, the surgical ablation of apocrine glands is considered the most effective way to permanently eliminate or reduce axillary malodor. 5 However, this procedure is inevitably associated with a long downtime and the risk of complications.…”
