Background: Burnout syndrome (BS) is a set of psychological symptoms resulting from the interaction between chronic occupational stress and individual factors. These symptoms include emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and decreased professional satisfaction. BS is manifested in a variety of professions and is prevalent in contexts in which health professionals are required to interact directly with the public. Objective: To determine the prevalence of BS among medical students at a university in Ceará State, Brazil. Methods: Of the 517 students enrolled in their first to eighth semester in 2013, 376 (72.7%) were contacted. A socio-economic evaluation questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory -Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) were administered. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 20.0. Two groups -burnout/risk and non-burnout -were compared using the chi-square and likelihood ratio tests with a significance level of 5%. Variables with p < 0.20 were included in a multivariate analysis logistical regression model. Results: Burnout was detected in 14.9% of the students, and 57.7% showed a risk of developing the syndrome. Logistic regressions showed an association between burnout and "have failed examinations" and "have considered abandoning the course", p = 0.047 and p < 0.0001, respectively. Discussion: Psychopedagogy should be implemented to address the high prevalence of burnout in medical students.

Estudantes de medicina constituem um grupo muito suscetível ao desenvolvimento de Transtornos Mentais Comuns (TMC). A necessidade de acompanhamento dos estudantes de medicina motivou um levantamento em um curso de Medicina. Utilizou-se o GHQ-12. Dos 631 alunos obteve-se 67,82% (428) de cobertura. A prevalência de TMC atingiu 58,8% dos discentes, com maior ocorrência no terceiro ano e nos últimos dois anos. Os resultados demonstram a necessidade de suporte acadêmico, para evitar desdobramentos graves e danosos à saúde mental, como também para uma melhora no acolhimento exercido aos seus futuros pacientes, ampliando a qualidade e humanizando a medicina.

Resumo: Este artigo buscou refletir a saúde do médico que atua em unidade de terapia intensiva, por ser este um ambiente de trabalho onde o estresse parece decorrer, principalmente, por tratar-se de um ambiente fechado, com uma carga laboral mais intensa, demandando demasiada atenção e concentração do profissional. O risco de morte eminente e a proximidade e convívio exaustivo com situações de maior sofrimento e dor, agravam a possibilidade de doenças emocionais. A literatura tem destacado que, o incentivo a manutenção de uma qualidade de vida por esses profissionais, configura uma forma de prevenir o desencadeamento de enfermidades físicas e mentais. Palavras-chave:Saúde do trabalhador, estresse laboral, Medicina e trabalho. The Medical Work in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and the propensity to develop Psychological Disorders abstract:This article aims to reflect the health of the doctor who works in an intensive care unit, because this is a work environment where stress seems to be mainly due to the fact that it is a closed environment, with a more intense workload, demanding too much attention and professional concentration. The risk of eminent death and the proximity and exhaustive conviviality with situations of greater suffering and pain, exacerbate the possibility of emotional illness. The literature has emphasized that the incentive to maintain a quality of life by these professionals is a way to prevent the onset of physical and mental illnesses.
