Transcatheter occlusion of patent ductus arteriosus with Gianturco coils.

Abstract: Transcatheter occlusion of patent ductus arteriosus can be safely and effectively achieved in patients with ductus diameters up to 3.3 mm. Coil occlusion does not cause obstruction to flow in the left pulmonary artery or descending aorta. Coils should be selected to provide a helical diameter twice or more the minimum ductus diameter and a length sufficient for three or more loops.

“…However, procedural anticoagulation for other lesions such as patent ductus arteriosus closure is highly variable. Some publications report routine use of procedural UFH for closure of the patent ductus arteriosus, 674 whereas other series do not comment on the use of thromboprophylaxis at all 675 or refer to variable use according to operator preference. 676 No study has evaluated the efficacy of and need for procedural thromboprophylaxis for patent ductus arteriosus device or coil closure.…”

“…Subsequently, a number of devices and coils have been used for catheter closure of PDA with varying degrees of success [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. The major drawbacks of these devices and coils are the high incidence of residual shunt, the sometimes complex delivery systems and their unsuitability for larger PDAs.…”
