Amplatzer Device closure of Atrial Septal Defects and Patent Ductus Arteriosus: Initial Experience

Abstract: Surgical closure of Atrial Septal Defects (ASD) and Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) can be performed successfully with low mortality. However, the morbidity associated with general anaesthesia, thoracotomy, cardiopulmonary bypass, postoperative monitoring in the intensive care unit, several days of hospital stay and the requirement of blood products is considerable. The expense associated with this morbidity, operative scar and the psychologic trauma to the patient and parents are additional disadvantages of su… Show more

“…7). 9 The ADO devices are useful in the setting of large patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) (>5.0 mm) and have 97% closure rate at 1 month and near 100% rate at 6 and 12 months. Another feature is its ease of retrievability and low risk of embolization 10 .…”

“…As an isolated lesion, it represents 9-12% of all CHDs. 1 The presence of volume overload of the left atrium and left ventricle is an indication for closure of the defect. Closure eliminates left to right shunt, volume overload of the left-sided circulation, the risk of pulmonary hypertension and the risk of infective endocarditis.…”

“…But non-surgical device closure is an alternative mode replacing the surgical method. 1 Surgical method has more morbidity and mortality than the device closure. Surgery is subjected to complications of cardio pulmonary by pass (CPB) which not infrequently leads to perfusion injury to brain and other vital organs.…”
