This study reveals the tradition of the Banjar inland tribes in their marriage rituals. For a Banjar ethnic woman, who adheres to her cultural customs, a marriage for them will only take place when it is arranged by the family. Arranged marriage means a marriage determined by the family with the prospective husband chosen by the family on certain factors. Family is the dominant factor that determines the future of a Banjar ethnic woman especially in the aspect of marriage. The research methodology used in this research is a literature review that reveals the secrets behind conventional marriage practices using a phenomenological approach. Firstly, this study found that for the Banjar ethnic group, traditionally arranged marriages are compulsory. Second, there is a culture of giving money in a nominal amount to the bride’s family before the wedding takes place. Third, the bride’s home must be filled with donations such as furniture or daily household necessities. If things as stated cannot be met, then the bride’s family will look for another prospective husband for her daughter. Such a marriage tradition is the practice and belief of the ancestors of the Banjar tribe, it is an ancient practice of dynamic animism.Keywords: Rituals; marriages; customs; Banjar; Indonesia.

A Framework for the Development of Wetland for Agricultural Use in Indonesia

Crop production needs to double to feed the world’s growing population. Indonesia, as the fourth most populated country in the world, needs to meet its food security challenge with a shrinking arable land area. Indonesia has over 34 million ha of swampland. The scarcity of arable land in Indonesia means wetlands are likely to be converted to agricultural use. The challenge is to both profitably and sustainably do so. This paper presents a framework for developing wetlands for food production, which includes (1) the characterization of land and problem of development; (2) analysis of historical development and lessons learned; (3) technology development; and (4) optimization of development. We analyze each of the components and its relation to regional economic growth and lessons learned. For successful future wetland development, three factors must be considered: Land-soil-water characterization, landscape and land use design, and community development. This framework can be adopted by other tropical areas for the development of wetlands.

Every tradition has its own characteristics and wisdom values that make it worth to be studied and documented. This research aims to describe the tradition of ma'bunga' lalang in the agricultural activities of Luwu society. The locus of this research was Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi Province. The data were obtained through observation on the practices/rituals in ma'bunga' lalang tradition and interview the informants. The data were then transcribed, triangulated, presented descriptively, and connected to the relevant references. There are nine kinds of practices/ritual in ma'bunga' lalang tradition following the stages of rice farming activities of Luwu society. Each practice/ritual has particular details of verbal and non-verbal acts which either performed by a bunga' lalang (the leader of the tradition) himself representing the farmers in the village or performed together with all the farmers-villagers. Nowadays, ma'bunga' lalang tradition is rarely performed due to several factors. Thus, it needs to be raised in the socio-cultural or localgovernmental forum to raise the society awareness of the tradition and to discuss the preservation of the parts of the tradition that not contradict to religion and modern practice/science.
