“…Vernonia amygadalina leaves are eaten in eastern Uganda 53 but also used to treat fever, measles, amoebiasis, influenza, convulsions 51 and stomach ache 7 Although malaria is one of the commonest diseases encountered during pregnancy, only V. amygdalina was reported to treat malaria, despite the large numbers of medicinal plants known for treating malaria throughout Uganda 52, 55 57 . Although several studies have documented the widespread use of V. amygdalina in treating malaria in Africa generally and Uganda specifically 7,[55][56][57] , it is surprising that only one medicinal plant was documented here. However, V. amygdalina has been shown to be relatively effective in treating uncomplicated malaria with an associated adequate clinical response (ACR) at day 14 in 67% of cases in a clinical trial in western Uganda, albeit with complete parasite clearance in only 32% of those with ACR 55 .…”

“…So far, the Uganda Malaria Control Strategic Plans (UMCSP) for 2006 and 2010 remain silent on the role of herbal medicines and medicinal plants in combating malaria (MoH 2006(MoH , 2010. There has been an increase in the amount of research documenting the widespread use of medicinal plant species in treatment of malaria in Uganda including work by Katuura et al (2007), Namukobe et al (2011), Ssegawa and Kasenene (2007), Stangeland et al (2011), andTabuti (2008) among others. It is hoped that such studies can help in generating data that can help inform policy.…”
