Historically, natural products have been the principal source of medications for the treatment of human diseases. Traditional medical practitioners employ Detarium microcarpum as a treatment for diabetes, malaria, wounds, inflammation, and even cancer. This study emphasizes the importance of harmonizing D. microcarpum research so that results from various sources may be directly compared to reach a scientific conclusion. We searched Google Scholar, Science Direct, Google.com, Wiley, PubMed, Hindawi, and Springer for research papers on Detarium microcarpum. This analysis excludes untrustworthy online data, thesis papers, and review publications on D. microcarpum. The leaves and stem bark were shown to have high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antidiabetic, and anticancer properties. The study also discovered that too much consumption is harmful. Polyphenols and flavonoids were the most commonly reported compounds. However, human safety and efficacy are yet to be fully evaluated, and further well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm preclinical findings. The leaves and stem bark extracts and isolated compound mechanism of action should be investigated. It is necessary to set a standard dose and ensure its safety.

Background: For decades, the resident of Zuru emirate have used herbal medicine to treat liver-related diseases including jaundice. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate and document the herbal medicine used for treating jaundice in Zuru emirate. Method: Oral interviews and questionnaire were used to document information on medicinal plants, medicinal practices, and demographic profiles of respondents. The medicinal plants that were mentioned were collected, identified, and assigned voucher numbers. The names were further authenticated using www.theplantlist.org and theworldfloraonline.org. Thereafter, the methanol stem bark extracts of three of the most frequently mentioned plants were subjected to in vitro bilirubin degradation assay. Result: A total of 46 TMPs Traditional medicine practitioners responded and cited 28 medicinal plants and medicinal practices used to treat jaundice. The most frequently mentioned plants were Erythrina senegalensis (19.6%) followed by Cochlospermum planchonii (13%), and Anogeissus leiocarpus (13%). The herbal remedies were prepared using different parts of the plants as boiled juice or powder and mostly taken as juice with pap or fresh raw cow milk. The in vitro bilirubin degradation assay revealed a time-dependent and dose-dependent bilirubin degradation by Anogeissus leiocarpus (63.05 %), Erythrina senegalensis (46.33%), and Cochlospermum planchonii (27.45%). Conclusion: The present findings revealed the medicinal plants that are used to treat jaundice and the potential jaundice ameliorative effect of these plants may involve bilirubin degradation. Future in vitro and in vivo mechanistic studies should investigate the jaundice ameliorative potency of these plants.

Plants are important to life, beyond nutritional role there are other functions that plant plays in helping humans and animals survive in their environment. This study focused on identifying the phytochemicals, bioactive compounds present in bitter kola leave, their in-vitro antioxidant activities and compared with n-hexane, ethanol and aqueous solvent to identify effective solvent for extraction of these phytochemicals in relation to food, health and nutritional benefits. The FTIR and GC-MS assessment of the extracts showed the existence of bioactive compounds. The outcome showed the detection of tannin, phenol, alkaloid, flavonoid, protein and carbohydrate in all leaf extracts, with ethanol having the highest concentration of these phytochemicals (p<0.05). The in-vitro free radical scavenging properties of bitter kola leaf extracts against 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl showed that the n-hexane leaf extract recorded the highest inhibitory activities when compared to both n-hexane and ethanol extracts (p<0.05) across all concentrations. However, all extracts showed increase in inhibitory activities with increasing concentrations. When compared to both n-hexane and ethanol leaf extracts, the ferric reducing antioxidant capacity of Garcinia kola leaf extracts rose with concentrations, with the aqueous leaf extract having the strongest reducing characteristics from 5mg/ml to 7mg/ml (p<0.05). The bioactive compounds present in bitter kola leaves makes it consumable and suitable in the treatment of different diseases such as bacterial infection, cancer, diabetics and inflammation because its level of effectiveness is confirmed in traditional medicine.
