Tracing the Evolution of Transfer of Training: A Review Article

Abstract: This article presents an evolution of transfer of training from 1901 to 2020. The discussion about transfer of training begins with a brief introduction to the framework about the transfer process, followed by the literature review on transfer of training. For the purpose of simplicity, the literature review is broadly discussed based on three eras of research

“…In the field of human resources, systems theory has gained wide acceptance as a critical perspective for viewing and analyzing organizations (Gyimah, 2023; Rahman & Bockarie, 2022; Rahman, 2020; Senge, 1990; Swanson & Holton, 2009; Yawson, 2013) [18,31,33,44,49] . The theoretical basis for this study was General Systems Theory (von Bertalanffy, 1968, as cited in Swanson & Holton, 2009, p. 128-129) [51,44] .…”

“…There are three categories of theories supporting the transfer of training: theories of training design (identical elements theory, principles theory, and near & far transfer theory), theories supporting transfer climate (transfer climate framework theory and organisation theory), and theories concerning transfer motivation (goal-setting theory, expectancy theory, equity theory, and need theories) (Rahman, 2020).…”
