Trace detection of hormones and sulfonamides in viscous cosmetic products by neutral desorption extractive electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry

Abstract: A sensitive method based on a geometry-independent neutral desorption (GIND) in combination with extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (EESI-MS) has been developed for fast detection of illicit additives such as sulfonamides and hormones in highly viscous cosmetic products. The method gave a low limit of detection (LOD) (in the range of 0.001-1 ng/g), acceptable relative standard deviation (RSD=6.8-11.4%) and reasonable recovery (87-116%) for direct measuring of nine types of hormones and sulfon… Show more

“…Ambient ionization techniques, such as SESI [24][25][26] and EESI [27][28][29] have demonstrated high sensitivity for gas phase and condensed phase analytes. The coupling of GC with ESI can be considered as the coupling of a separation technique with SESI/EESI leading to improved analytical performance.…”

“…Sample preparation is usually achieved through multi-step, laborious and time-consuming processes, which also require laboratories procedures such as solvent extraction, dilution, reagent mixing, sonication, heating, centrifugation, and filtration. Although these analytical processes work well for analysis of large numbers of samples at centralized locations, it is also highly desirable to develop fast and easy-to-use methods for on-site screening, especially for situations when rapid decision making is required by inspectors in the field [40, 41]. …”

“…Cosmetics are complex mixtures composed of oils, fats, waxes, surfactants, moisturizing agents, emulsifiers, preservatives, pigments, flavors, and so on . In order to achieve functions such as whitening, eliminating freckles, removing acne, etcetera, illicit additives such as antibiotics are usually added to the cosmetics.…”
