Toward the creation of novel food waste management systems: A network approach

Abstract: In light of the global significance of food waste, a greater focus on improving food waste management strategies is called for. Implementing such management strategies requires a better understanding of stakeholder relations. This paper analyses the structure of multiplex relations among stakeholders involved in the creation of a novel food waste management system, investigating the drivers of network formation when multiple collaborations are observed between pairs of stakeholders. We apply Social Network Ana… Show more

“…In recent years, literature has increasingly focused on the importance of the circular economy in reducing food waste (Chen et al, 2020;Ghinoi et al, 2020;Jurgilevich et al, 2016) (Garrone et al, 2014). Initiatives against food waste, which are mainly based on a circular economy (Ghinoi et al, 2020;Jurgilevich et al, 2016;Papargyropoulou et al, 2014), are usually supported by external funders. However, once these funds have been exhausted, the projects need to become financially self-sufficient (Pheifer, 2017;Ranta et al, 2018).…”

“…Over the last 10 years, numerous studies and projects have examined possible managerial solutions to counter food waste (Martin & Danielsson, 2016; Moggi, Bonomi, & Ricciardi, 2018). In this vein, a food waste ‘hierarchy’ has been developed, with food waste prevention emerging as the single most important priority, followed by the delivery of surplus food to the needy and the conversion of food waste into animal feed in the rise of the circular economy (Ghinoi, Silvestri, & Steiner, 2020; Jurgilevich et al, 2016; Papargyropoulou, Lozano, Steinberger, Wright, & Bin Ujang, 2014).…”

“…In order to create an effective waste handling system, best international practices were considered and adapted by those European countries that have already harmonized their regulatory base with the EU laws ( Fig. 1) and brought it into line with the directives considered in [10,11].…”

“…In some models, bottom-up approaches are being adopted. These approaches are intended to involve all actors of the FSC, emphasizing the importance of formal multistakeholder collaborations and focusing on the role of different relational forms in stakeholder networks (exchange of information, sharing of resources, and development of cooperative projects) [34]. They can be transformed into social innovation (SI) models, representing a valid alternative tool for ensuring sustainable production and consumption, i.e., FW and FL reduction.…”
