Heritage and cultural tourism (HCT) is currently one of the fastest growing fields in the tourism domain. Tourism as a composite field of study has traditionally been located within the economic and business management sector. However, due to the range of social, political and ethical issues pertaining to heritage and cultural tourism, it can be argued that it should be also located within a humanities context. After elucidating certain key concepts, the paper will consider the interdisciplinary nature of tourism with specific reference to the groundbreaking work of the leading international tourism theorist John Tribe. The relevance of tourism and its relationship with the humanities cluster of established disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, art, literature, history and heritage will be discussed. It will become apparent that heritage and cultural tourism is also locating itself within the domain of the humanities, despite efforts to dislocate it.

Resumen Esta investigación analiza los orígenes, los significados y las estructuras del turismo, con el fin de reunir y comparar algunas perspectivas y sus implicaciones desde un punto de vista hermenéutico. El estudio tiene en cuenta los orígenes etimológicos e historiológicos del turismo, haciendo referencia a escuelas como la naturalista y la histórico-evolutiva. Posteriormente, resalta la importancia de conceptos como el loisir y el ocio en la definición del fenómeno turístico, y examina modelos y sistemas turísticos que se han desarrollado con los años, tales como los propuestos por la Organización Mundial del Turismo y Neil Leiper. Luego de tomar en consideración debilidades de algunas de estas percepciones, analiza propuestas que consideran que el turismo es un fenómeno complejo y, como tal, debe estudiarse desde esta perspectiva.Palabras clave: Turismo, sistemas de turismo, modelos de turismo, complejidad, historia del turismo. AbstractThis paper analyses the origins, meanings and structures of tourism, to bring together and compare some perspectives and their implication from an hermeneutic perspective. It takes into account the etymological and historic origins of this activity, making reference to schools of though such as the eternist and the historic-evolutionary. Then, highlights the importance of concepts like leisure in the definition of the touristic activity and examines tourism models and systems that have been developed along the years, like those presented by the World Tourism Organization and Leiper. After taking into account the debilities presented by some of theses perceptions, it analyses proposals that consider that tourism is a complex phenomenon and, as one, it must be studied from this perspective.

Analizując problem nadania turystyce statusu samodzielnej dyscypliny naukowej można zauważyć wiele zróżnicowanych i często przeciwstawnych opinii artykułowanych przez różne grupy naukowców. Wydaje się, że wynikają one w dużym stopniu z różnych tradycji badawczych (wraz z uznawanymi w ich obrębie paradygmatami), z których wywodzą się poszczególni badacze turystyki. Oznacza to, że być może kluczową rolę odgrywa tutaj tzw. tożsamość naukowa badaczy (KADRI 2008), która wpływa na ich poglą-dy odnośnie do statusu turystyki jako dyscypliny naukowej.Wydaje się jednak, że punktem wyjścia szczegółowych analiz powinno być przyjęcie szerszej perspektywy poznawczej określonej w zasadniczym pytaniu, czy będziemy w stanie lepiej poznawać turystykę dysponując samodzielną dyscypliną naukową, czy też powinniśmy poprzestać na jej badaniu wykorzystując dorobek dyscyplin już istniejących? Innymi słowy, można by zapytać czy nasza wiedza o turystyce będzie bogatsza dzięki powstaniu nowej dyscypliny? Biorąc pod uwagę tak szerokie pole badawcze turystyki (a tym samym obszary zainteresowań badaczy) konkluzja nie wydaje się być oczywista i zależy od odpowiedzi na następujące pytania szczegółowe: 1) czy jest możliwa naukowa specjalizacja w tak szerokiej dziedzinie jaka odnosi się do turystyki?, 2) czy w obrębie jednej dyscypliny możliwe będzie http://dx
