Torque Measurement Technology by Using a Magnetostrictive Ring and Multiple Magnets

Abstract: A torque measurement method that combines the inverse magnetostrictive effect with twist angle measurement has been proposed in this paper. A Kalman filter and complementary filter are applied to significantly reduce the noises and errors in the proposed method. This new measurement block can detect the applied torque with an error of less than 1%. The proposed measurement method can be used in static and dynamic conditions.

“…In a later study, Beirle and Seemann [351] managed to build a remote torque sensor fabricated from Fe 32 Co 46 Hf 11 N 12 and Fe 40 Co 37 Zr 11 N 12 thin films, reaching sensitivity near 10 MHz/Nm in a range of 0 -100 Nm. In another attempt, Xu et al [352] equipped a solid rotating shaft with a magnetostrictive ring and eight permanent magnets for torque measurement and twist angle detection. With an error of less than 1%, this configuration was appropriate for both static and dynamic conditions.…”

“…Capelle et al proposed an indirect torque measurement method using an Augmented Extended Kalman filter, a physics-based model and encoder and strain measurements on the LSS and HSS and the GB housing, respectively [ 22 ]. In [ 23 ], a torque measurement methodology was proposed using both magnetostrictive effect and twist angle measurement. The disadvantages of an indirect torque measurement method include complexities in the SG and electronics installation on the rotating LSS [ 15 ].…”
