Bovine teeth as substitute for human teeth in dental research: a review of literature

The aim of this paper was to review in vitro and in situ studies that directly compared the use of bovine teeth as a substitute for human teeth in dental experiments. A PubMed search was conducted for papers published from 1953 to December 30, 2010 using the following keywords: "human bovine enamel" or "human bovine dentin" or "human bovine teeth". The abstracts of the studies resulting from the keyword search were read, and all papers that compared human and bovine teeth were fully read. Only original articles written in English and directly comparing human and bovine substrates were included in the review. The search was supplemented by manual searches of the reference lists from each identified paper. Out of 76 studies initially selected, 68 fulfilled the selection criteria for inclusion. The studies covered seven categories: dental morphology, chemical composition, physical properties, dental caries, dental erosion/abrasion, bonding/adhesive strength, and marginal microleakage. Inconsistent data exist regarding whether bovine teeth can be considered an appropriate substitute for human teeth in dental research. Morphological, chemical composition and physical property differences between the two substrates must be considered when interpreting results obtained from any experiment using bovine tooth substrate. Estudio de la variación de la permeabilidad de la dentina radicular usando isótopos 99m Tc, después de la aplicación de láser de alta intensidad RESUMENObjetivo: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar las variaciones de la permeabilidad dentinaria radicular de dientes humanos después del preparo químico-quirúrgico e irradiación con láser de Er: YAG, Nd: YAG, a través de la utilización del radioisótopo tecnecio-99m ( 99m Tc) libre. Materiales y métodos: Canales de treinta raíces palatinas de primeros premolares superiores humanos fueron preparados y divididos, aleatoriamente, en 3 grupos experimentales: G1 (control), G2 (irradiación con láser de Er: YAG) y G3 (irradiación con láser de Nd: YAG). Las muestras recibieron en el interior del canal radicular, 99m Tc libre en cantidad suficiente para el llenado y colocados en tubos de ensayo contiendo 1 ml de solución salina. Después de 1 hora, la cuenta del isótopo radioactivo ( 99m Tc) fue realizada. Resultados: Después del análisis estadístico (ANOVA), fue verificado que los mejores resultados obtenidos en cuanto a la disminución de la permeabilidad se encontraron en el Grupo 3, seguido del Grupo 2 y del Grupo 1. Conclusión: Concluimos que irradiación con láser de Nd: YAG provocó una disminución significativa de la permeabilidad dentinaria del canal radicular. El láser de Er: YAG y el control en relación a la permeabilidad de la dentina de las paredes del canal radicular no presentaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas a nivel de 5%.Palabras clave: Endodoncia, permeabilidad de la dentina radicular, Er:YAG, Nd:YAG, radioisótopo tecnecio99m (DeCS Bireme). Microorganisms surviving in the root canal system despite the chemomechnical preparation are the main reason for reinfection and endodontic treatment failure [1]. Among them, Enterococcus faecalis is the most commonly isolated bacterium from teeth with periapical periodontitis with or without periodontal lesions [2][3][4]. Because of its ability to form intra-and extraradicular biofilms, AbstractBackground. Microorganisms surviving in the root canal system despite the chemomechanical preparation are the main reason for reinfection and endodontic treatment failure. The introduction of laser-assisted endodontics resulted in higher success rates and less recurrent infections. Objectives. To compare the antibacterial action of diode laser irradiation (CV -1500 W, IMP -3000 W), photoactivated disinfection (PAD), and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on Enterococcus faecalis in an infected tooth model. Material and Methods. Fifty freshly extracted bovine teeth with single canals were prepared to apical size 45° ISO, autoclaved and contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis. After a 48-hour incubation the specimens were randomly divided into four treatment groups and one control group (n = 10): Group 1 was irradiated with 1500 mW (continuous wave diode laser irradiation); Group 2 was irradiated with 3000 mW (impulse diode laser irradiation, 300 ms -pulse, 300 ms -pause); Group 3 was subjected to photo-activated disinfection and Group 4 was irrigated with a 5.25% NaOCl solution for 15 min. Group 5 was rinsed with saline solution (control). After treatment, the dentin samples were collected and the number of surviving bacteria was determined by classical quantitative microbiologic evaluation. Results. The differences in the mean number of the colony forming units (CFU/mg) between all the groups analyzed were statistically significant (p < 0.001). The highest number of microorganisms was observed in the control group (52.7 x 103 CFU/mg). Both diode laser applications resulted in a significant reduction in the number of E. faecalis cells: G1 -1.4 x 103 CFU/mg, G2 -4.2 x 103 CFU/mg, whereas in the group subjected to photo-activated disinfection the extent of reduction was significantly less (G3 -42.8 x 103 CFU/mg). Conclusions. The present study demonstrates that CW and pulse diode laser applications are both suitable for root canal disinfection, but do not eradicate all bacteria (Dent. Med. Probl. 2016, 53, 2, 216-221).
