Topical 5% Imiquimod Sequential to Surgery for HPV-Related Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lip

Abstract: Background: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common neoplasms affecting the oral cavity and the face. Its more differentiated forms may be associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. Case report: In this paper, we report the case of an 86-year-old patient with a well-differentiated SCC of the lower lip associated with HPV treated with surgery with a non-complete histological resolution. “…A peculiar feature of this tumor is the abnormal and quick growth of keratinocytes in the epidermis, often secondary to ultraviolet or sunlight exposure [1]. When this tumor involves the head and neck area, it may be particularly aggressive and can account for up to 90% of all oral malignancies [2]. In recent decades, there has been a dramatically increased incidence in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection [3].…”

“…Lastly, 5% imiquimod has been proposed as an adjuvant treatment after surgery in a SCC of the lip, with no relapse of the condition after 2 years. A prospective trial with a high number of patients will be necessary to confirm the effectiveness of this approach [ 47 ].…”
