Tong-Xie-Yao-Fang improves intestinal permeability in diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome rats by inhibiting the NF-κB and notch signalling pathways

Abstract: BackgroundTong-Xie-Yao-Fang (TXYF) has been shown to be effective in diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) patients. However, the underlying mechanism remains to be clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and related mechanisms of TXYF in an IBS-D rat model.MethodsThe IBS-D rat model was established with 4% acetic acid and evaluated by haematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Then, IBS-D rats were divided into control, TXYF and rifaximin groups and treated intragastrically wi… Show more

“…As we previously described [23], the rats were placed in metabolic cages for 24 h with free access to rodent chow and water. Defecation frequency and FWC were used to estimate the colonic motility and sensibility.…”

“…Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and fibrosis, and it could improve the intestinal mucosal histology by regulating the composition of gut microbiota [51]. Tong-Xie-Yao-Fang can effectively improve the intestinal permeability and enhance the intestinal mucosal barrier function [52]. Cordyceps polysaccharide can improve the intestinal flora and integrity and reduce the metabolic endotoxins and inflammation [53].…”

“…Meanwhile, it has been demonstrated in IBS-D rat models that TXYF can regulate the level of 5-HT and SP with respect to visceral hypersensitivity and TXYF can modulate the intestinal flora by downregulating the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes and the fecal abundance of Clostridium [ 11 , 12 ]. Moreover, TXYF has been proved to ameliorate intestinal permeability by inhibiting inflammation-related NF-κB and notch pathways [ 13 ]. However, heterogeneity about the constitution and the dose of TXYF exists in previous studies.…”
