TLC screening for eleutherosides B, E, and E1, and isofraxidin in the roots of sixEleutherococcusspecies cultivated in Poland

Abstract: Because chemical and pharmacological studies of Eleutherococcus species growing in Asia showed their biological activity depends on glycosides known as eleutherosides, we used TLC to search for eleutherosides in ethanol extracts of the roots of E. senticosus, E. setchuensis, E. sesiliflorus, E. henryi, E. gracilistylus, and E. divaricatus cultivated in Poland. Eleutherosides B, E, and E 1 were identified in all the roots investigated and isofraxidin was identified in the roots of E. senticosus. Satisfactory se… Show more

“…In the DPPH assay, the ethanolic extracts of the leaves and roots showed greater radical scavenging activity than those of the fruits and the chloroform extracts of roots ( Table 2: DPPH radical scavenging activity of chloroform (1) and ethanolic (2) extracts of Eleutherococcus spp. (EC 50 mg/mL).…”

“…TLC was done according to the method of Załuski et al [ 12 ]. Briefly, TLC was performed on 10 cm × 20 cm glass Si60 HPTLC F254 plates using chloroform : methanol : water 70 : 30 : 4 v/v/v for the ethanol extracts and chloroform : diethyl ether 1 : 1 v/v for the chloroform extracts.…”

“…A new source of AChE and BuChE inhibitors can be secondary metabolites present in Eleutherococcus species, which are native to Eastern Asia, the Himalayas, and Northeastern Russia. The main secondary metabolites are polyphenols that include eleutherosides B, B1, E, and E1 and are thought to be the pharmacologically most active constituents [ 7 12 ]. These species have been used in old Chinese pharmacy for improving human's physical and mental efficiency.…”
