“…Athletic identity has been integrally tied to the risk of possible psychological distress when faced with injury (Brewer, 1993;Webb, Nasco, Riley, & Headrick, 1998), sport disengagement (Erpic, Wylleman, & Zupancic, 2004;Grove, Lavallee, & Gordon, 1997;Pearson & Petitpas, 1990), delayed career development (Murphy, Petitpas, & Brewer, 1996), burnout (Raedeke, 1997), and more recently to anxiety (Masten, Tusak, & Faganel, 2006). In the development of appropriate interventions for athletes faced with these issues, it is important that sport psychology practitioners, researchers, and other athlete support staff have rapid, reliable, and valid measures that aid in the assessment of important psychological constructs such as athletic identity.…”

“…Athletic identity has also been examined in relation to sport anxiety. Masten and colleagues (Masten, Tušak, & Faganel, 2006) administered surveys to 410 Slovene athletes from various competition levels to measure their athletic identity (AIMS) and their levels of trait and state anxiety (STAI-X1 STAI-X2: Spielberger, Gorsuch, & Lushene, 1970). The researchers found athletes who were classified as "World Class" had higher levels of both state and trait anxiety than did athletes who were classified in the lower divisions of sport.…”

“…However, an overemphasis on athletic identity may lead to negative outcomes as stated earlier. Studies have stated that a reduction in the opportunity to participate in sports harms the mental health of athletes and their athletic identity levels (Masten et al, 2006 ; Miller and Hoffman, 2009 ). Consequently, when an athlete is not regularly allowed to express himself/herself, there is a high tendency for that athlete to experience a reduced athletic identity (Fraser-Thomas et al, 2008 ; Altintaş and Kelecek, 2017 ).…”
