Time of initial detection of fetal and extra-fetal structures by ultrasonographic examination in Miniature Schnauzer bitches

Abstract: Serial ultrasonographic examinations were performed daily on 9 Miniature Schnauzer bitches from the 15th day of gestation until parturition to determine the time the gestational structures were first detected. The gestational age was timed from the day of ovulation (day 0), which was estimated to occur when the plasma progesterone concentration was >4.0 ng/ml. The gestational length in 9 Miniature Schnauzer bitches was found to be 63.0 ± 1.7 (range 61-65) days. The initial detection of the fetal and extra-feta… Show more

“…Ultrasonographic fetometry is commonly applied for the assessment of foetal growth during canine pregnancy. In different weight or breed groups of dogs, this method has been thoroughly investigated, and the measurement of extrafoetal or foetal structures allowed to prognose parturition day with formulas generated from the growth curves of selected parameters (Kim, Travis, & Meyers‐Wallen, ; Lopate, ; Luvoni & Beccaglia, ; Kim & Son, ; Lenard, Hopper, Lester, Richardson, & Robertson, 2007).…”

“…The time of ovulation should be accurately determined for the artificial insemination of bitches because frozen spermatozoa rapidly lose their vitality (7,10). Vaginal cytology cannot accurately predict the time of ovulation and is therefore not effective in artificial insemination (6,10).…”

“…This method is not satisfactory given that the ovulation time is not fixed in the 5 to 30 day period of estrous. Therefore, various methods for predicting ovulation, including serum or plasma hormone concentration, vaginal cytology, vaginal electrical impedance (VEI), vaginal endoscopy and ultrasonography (USG) evaluation of the ovary, have been employed (3,7,9,10).…”
