Tigecycline: A Review of Properties, Applications, and Analytical Methods

Abstract: Tigecycline is a new glycylcycline with an expanded broad-spectrum antibiotic, including inhibition of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, atypical, anaerobic, and antibiotic-resistant organisms. Trials have demonstrated that tigecycline is noninferior to the comparators for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections as well as complicated intra-abdominal infections. Tigecycline is only available as an intravenous preparation and analytical methods to its quantitation in pharmaceutical products … Show more

“…21 Tigecycline is a new tetracycline derivate and its chemical structure also contains phenolic β-diketone. 22 Study in animals showed that tigecycline reduced the MMP-9 levels; 10 however, result of the present study is not inline. Neither at the first nor at the seventh day after administration showed significant differences between the two groups.…”

“…8 Gastrointestinal adverse effects have been described as prevalent: nausea and vomiting were the first (30%) and second (20%) most common events, respectively. Other much less common adverse events included headache, hypertension, anemia, prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time, increased aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase, dizziness, insomnia, pruritus, and rash.…”

“…Tigecycline, to date, the only commercially available glycylcycline, is structurally derived from minocycline by adding a side chain to the carbon ring of the tetracycline backbone, yielding an extended antimicrobial spectrum (21). How this modification preserves the anti-inflammatory properties is not completely explored.…”
