Thyroid Cancer Incidences From Selected South America Population-Based Cancer Registries: An Age-Period-Cohort Study

Abstract: PurposeThe incidence of thyroid cancer (TC) has increased substantially worldwide. However, there is a lack of knowledge about age-period-cohort (APC) effects on incidence rates in South American countries. This study describes the TC incidence trends and analyzes APC effects in Cali, Colombia; Costa Rica; Goiânia, Brazil; and Quito, Ecuador.Materials and MethodsData were obtained from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents series, and the crude and age-standardized incidence rates were calculated. Trends wer… Show more

“…Thyroid cancer commonly occurs in young adults, with 28% of new diagnoses in the 20‐ to 40‐year‐old age group. Its incidence in patients under 65 is increasing , extending down to the 45‐ to 49‐year‐old age group in some South American countries . In contrast with many tumors discussed in this article, thyroid cancer in young adults is usually curable because it most frequently is detected early as an asymptomatic neck mass.…”

“…The mortality trend was estimated with a logarithmic regression of the adjusted rates and it was evaluated with the Student’s t -test where the alternative hypothesis is the slope not equal to 0. The annual percentage change (APC) was estimated with the following formula: APC = (e m - 1) * 100 where m is the slope that was previously obtained in the logarithmic regression [ 7 , 8 ]. NCSS version 11 statistical software was used for the analyses.…”

“…Muitos autores apresentaram sugestões para a resolução do problema 6,46 . Neste artigo, optou-se pelo método de ajuste de modelos com funções estimáveis proposto por Holford 11 , Clayton & Schifflers 47 que tem sido amplamente aceito e utilizado, inclusive em estudos brasileiros 48,49 . Outro ponto importante é o uso da causa básica de óbito que está sujeita aos erros de classificação e, consequentemente, podem subestimar ou superestimar a magnitude das taxas de mortalidade.…”
