Throwing velocity predictors in elite team handball players

Abstract: Team Handball (TH) consists of intense, intermittent activities such as running, sprinting, jumping as well as regular throwing, hitting, blocking, and pushing between players. In addition to technical and tactical skills, it has been argued that one of the key skills necessary for success in team handball is throwing performance (Gorostiaga et al., 2006;Marques and González-Badillo, 2006). Although the technique of motion and the fitness level can be improved by the training process, others variables like str… Show more

“…Zapartidis et al (2011) reported that ball velocity in 7-m standing throw is significantly correlated with 30-m sprint and long jump. Alves and Marques (2013) found that countermovement jump and 30-m sprint are correlated with ball velocity in over arm throw with a three-step running throw. Saavedra et al (2018) also reported that a countermovement jump is correlated with ball velocity in 7-m standing throw and 9-m throw after three steps and a jump.…”

“…Overhead handball throwing is a complex, discrete, fast movement and the key technical element for successful handball performance (Cuevas-Aburto, Janicijevic, Pérez-Castilla, Chirosa-Ríos, & García-Ramos, 2020; Saavedra, Halldórsson, Kristjánsdóttir, Þorgeirsson, & Geir, 2019). The handball throwing velocity (HTV) has been identified as the crucial variable that can distinguish between skilled and less skilled handball players (Alves & Marques, 2013). It is not surprising then that many researchers have been trying to find the optimal training procedure for increasing HTV.…”
