Three-phase hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction combined with HPLC-UV for the determination of isothiazolinone biocides in adhesives used for food packaging materials

Abstract: The present study deals with the development of a liquid microextraction procedure for enhancing the sensitivity of the determination of 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one in adhesives. The procedure involves a three-phase hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction using a semipermeable polypropylene membrane, which contained 1-octanol as the organic phase in the pores of the membrane. The donor and acceptor phases are aqueous acidic and alkaline media, respectively, and th… Show more

“…Moreover, the available information refers mainly to cosmetics, which are frequently reformulated, and the majority of which stay on the market for < 5 years (14). The methodology for the analytical determination of isothiazolinones has been developed mainly for environmental water matrices (18)(19)(20)(21)(22), food packaging materials (23,24), detergents (14,16,17), and cosmetic matrices (14,17,20,(25)(26)(27), using either liquid chromatography (LC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), or, to a lesser extent, gas chromatography.…”

“…Thus, LPME as a miniaturized form of LLE is introduced to eliminate these limitations. LPME is carried out in various shapes including single drop microextraction [12], dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) [13,14], and hollow fiber LPME [15,16]. Among them, DLLME is widely used for the separation of various analytes from different samples because it has several good advantages such as having a simple and rapid procedure, and high enhancement factor [13,17].…”

“…LPME is the miniaturized implementation of the conventional LLE, in which the amount of organic solvents is greatly reduced. LPME has been performed in different modes, including single drop microextraction (SDME) , headspace LPME , hollow‐fiber (HF) LPME , dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) , and solidified floating organic drop microextraction (SFODME) . LPME has also been the subject of several reviews .…”
