Thermal signature measurements for ammonium nitrate/fuel mixtures by laser heating

Abstract: Measurements were carried out to obtain thermal signatures of several ammonium nitrate/fuel (ANF) mixtures, using a laser-heating technique referred to as the laser-driven thermal reactor (LDTR). The mixtures were ammonium nitrate (AN)/kerosene, AN/ethylene glycol, AN/paraffin wax, AN/petroleum jelly, AN/confectioner’s sugar, AN/cellulose (tissue paper), nitromethane/cellulose, nitrobenzene/cellulose, AN/cellulose/nitromethane, AN/cellulose/nitrobenzene. These mixtures were also compared with AN/nitromethane a… Show more

“…Equations and 8 recast Equation 6 for the fuel oil and carbon residue, respectively, the two most common fuels comprised in the emulsion. In general, however, the fuel could be carbon-based (Cook and Talbot, 1951;Mahadevan, 2013;Nazarian and Presser, 2016) or nonconventional, depending on fuel availability (Attalla et al, 2008;Hurley et al, 2010;Meyers and Shanley, 1990;Resende and Lima, 2014).…”

“…Therefore, exploring an alternative fuel phase has been an emerging area of research and has substantial significance for mining and allied industry. Efforts have been made in the last few decades for the various alternative fuel phase of ANFO such as coal dust, confectioners' sugar, aluminum powder, TNT, sugar cane bagasse, rice straw, corn cob, tires residue, and biodiesel by a various research group [13][14][15][16][17][18]. Apart from Bio-diesel, the other alternative fuels showed poor detonation properties compare to ANFO [15].…”
