Thermal decomposition of solid mixtures of 2-oxy-4,6-dinitramine-s-triazine (DNAM) and phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN)

Abstract: The thermal decomposition of solid mixtures of 2-oxy-4,6-dinitramine-s-triazine (DNAM) and phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) at different mass ratios has been studied. Simultaneous thermal analysis (DSC/TG) and thermomicroscopy have been used. It was found that PSAN promotes the lowering of the decomposition temperature of DNAM. The beginning of this process occurs when both components are in the solid state irrespective of the composition. However, the composition appears as the main factor determining… Show more

“…Small peaks appeared at 87 C, 176 C and larger peaks at 246 C and 282 C can be ascribed to the decomposition of ammonium nitrate. 13,14 The weight loss of the ammonium nitrate decomposition is 34%, which is close to the test value of 37.8%. There is no weight loss or heat release above 282 C, suggesting that ammonium nitrate decomposed completely within the temperature of 300 C. However, mass losses occur at different temperature when the suspension (AlPO 4 nano-particles) is mixed with LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 and then analyzed by thermal analysis.…”

“…Phase stabilization of AN with metal oxides is beneficial with respect to burning rate, ignition and other properties [9]. For example, copper oxide significantly influences the transition temperature of AN by the formation of a solid solution of copper(II) diammine dinitrate in the AN crystal lattice.…”

“…As the amount of PSAN is decreased in the mixtures, the corresponding lower liquid phase leads to remarkable changes in the overall decomposition process. For these cases, an early exothermic peak ascribable to the thermolysis of DNAM is still being detected, although in a more limited extent, indicating that only a partial and slower decomposition occurs at lower temperatures (19) .…”

“…The thermal behavior of solid mixtures of DNAM and PSAN over the DNAM=PSAN mass ratios ranging from 10=90 to 90=10 was recently investigated (19) . The results are summarized in Figure 1 in the form of thermoanalytical curves (the thermoanalytical results reported in this paper were performed on a Rheometric Scientific-STA 1500 equipment, at 10 C min À1 , using N 2 as purge gas).…”
