“There is no carnival without samba”: Revealing barriers hampering biodiversity-based R&D and eco-design in Brazil

Abstract: Considering the unique relevance of Brazilian biodiversity, this research aims to investigate the main barriers to biodiversity-based R&D and eco-design development in a leading national company which has been commended for its innovation and sustainability. The methodology for this research was based on on-location visits, in-depth interviews, and consensus building among R&D, sustainability, and quality managers. A multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach was adopted through interpretive structural mod… Show more

“…Organizations increasingly consider the need to integrate environmental performance into product development projects with the aim of reducing harmful effects on the environment and achieving improvements in their activities (ANBT, 2014), finding in eco-design an important tool for the sustainable development of organizational activities (Jabbour et al, 2018).…”

“…The following five categories of innovation were identified: product innovation, process innovation, organizational The key themes in pre-innovation phases are, as expected, the ones focusing on barriers and obstacles to sustainable innovation or those that motivate sustainable innovation. The former has a fundamental role as a better understanding of the potential barriers to the corporate environmental management can be useful during decision-making processes and to drive decisions regarding the prioritization of issues that deserve attention from managers and policymakers towards a more sustainable society [41]. Among the main barriers, the scarcity of resources, high costs, complexity, risks and, above all, the uncertainty regarding future results can be enumerated [42].…”

“…Ecodesign aims to design products where the minimizing of their environmental impact throughout their life cycle is considered (Karlsson and Luttropp, 2006;Jabbour et al, 2018). In an ecodesign-based product, design, quality and customer satisfaction requirements must be integrated with environmental requirements, so that solutions are considering their impact during all stages of the product life cycle, from raw material extraction through to manufacturing, packaging, use, recycling and reuse (Bovea and Perez-Belis, 2012;Luiz et al, 2016).…”

“…After that, the framework was evaluated by two companies with different levels of maturity in the application of ecodesign, and which develop products derived from Brazilian biodiversity. The concern for integrating ecodesign into PPM can be considered important, especially for firms developing products based on biodiversity, as they are companies involved in the development of products that directly impact species and ecosystems (Jabbour et al, 2018;Primmer et al, 2015). As such, the adoption of ecodesign can decrease the main causes of biodiversity loss, such as over-exploitation of natural resources, pollution, and soil contamination (Alvarado-Quesada et al, 2014).…”
