Therapeutic Properties of Mushrooms in Managing Adverse Effects in the Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a modern medical condition characterized by central obesity, hyperglycaemia, hypercholesterolemia and hypertension. The beneficial effects of mushrooms in lowering the symptoms of MS were known from both traditional and conventional medicine. Edible mushrooms, their extracts, polysaccharide fractions and isolated compounds possessed hypoglycaemic, cholesterol and triglyceride lowering ability, hypotensive effects, as well as weight managing activity by influencing satiety. The most a… Show more

“…For prebiotics from foods to have their beneficial effects they should not be structurally changed by food-processing conditions, such as heat and microwaves. Mushrooms and mushroom-derived polysaccharides, illustrated in Figure 3 , Figure 4 and Figure 5 , have been shown to have therapeutic properties against metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by obesity, hyperglycemia associated with diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension [ 2 , 3 , 4 ].…”

“…The prices of forest products are higher than that of other food ingredients, and little is known about their utilization. In a study using mushrooms, one of the representative clinical products, mushrooms had anti-obesity and antidiabetic properties [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. There are not many dishes that use mushrooms as the main ingredient, but we obtained high satisfaction ratings from the participants for the mushroom-containing dishes.…”

“…In a recent study, forest products that lower insulin resistance have been reported, such as acorn and sago, making them highly useful for diets for patients with diabetes or metabolic diseases. In addition, mushrooms have been shown to have anti-obesity and antidiabetic properties [ 2 , 3 , 4 ].…”

“…Body weights of mice in treated groups decreased from the control or the dexamethasone groups indicating that the consumption of T. clypeatus has changed body weight of animals during the period of the study. Mushrooms and mushroom-derived polysaccharides, have been shown to have therapeutic properties against metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by obesity, hyperglycemia associated with diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension [24][25][26]. This was attributed to their anti-hypercholesteremic effects which result in body weight.…”
