Therapeutic antibiotic use patterns in dogs: observations from a veterinary teaching hospital

Abstract: Objectives To describe therapeutic antibiotic use patterns in dogs at a small animal teaching hospital. Methods A retrospective case analysis of randomly sampled antibiotic prescriptions in dogs from May 20, 2008 – May 20, 2009, deemed to be for therapeutic use, was performed. Records were reviewed to determine if there was documentation of confirmed, suspected or no evidence of infection. The five most frequently prescribed antibiotics were identified and analyzed for their distribution in these categories.… Show more

“…At 1 veterinary teaching hospital, the percent of infections for which a second‐tier antimicrobial, enrofloxacin, was prescribed in which a culture was performed totaled 55%. For first‐tier drugs, such as amoxicillin, cephalexin, or amoxicillin clavulanate, the percent of infections in which a culture was performed averaged only 14% . Although this example only reflects the practices of 1 hospital, it allows us to compare the relative compliance to carbapenem guidelines that state that a bacterial culture must be performed before antimicrobial treatment is initiated.…”

“…Amoxicillin has been reported to be useful in the management of many indications due to its potent bactericidal activity against a range of clinically relevant bacteria such as Escherichia coli , Bordetella bronchiseptica , Clostridium , Streptococcus , and Staphylococcus species in broilers (Anadon et al., ; Xie et al., ). Also, the relatively safe of amoxicillin, its broad spectrum of activity, and cheapness have motivated its use in poultry industry (Wayne, McCarthy, & Lindenmayer, ; Xie et al., ). In birds, oral water medication is the most appropriate route although some complications such as palatability, solubility, inactivation of drug, and distinct feed and water intake patterns may occur among the sick and healthy animals.…”
