Theranostic and Molecular Classification of Breast Cancer

Abstract: Emerging evidence shows promise that, in addition to hormone receptors and HER2 studies, evaluating tumors with gene expression profiling can provide additional prognostic and predictive information, further aiding clinical management and leading to a more personalized approach to treating breast cancer.

“…For NETs, the development of biomathematically weighted scoring systems will facilitate the introduction of a risk probability ( 52 ) analysis and allow for the improvement of prognostic and predictive information, thereby aiding clinical decision making ( 29,53 ). An alternative possibility is that interface of bloodbased transcriptional information relating to the proliferative regulation of tumor growth metastasis and metabolism will likely provide information that is synergistic with neuroendocrine cell function ( 29 ).…”

“…Algorithmic analyses, using the results of these assays as well as other patient information (if used), can then be performed and are typically reported as a numeric score(s) or as a probability (Eastman et al 2012) that can provide additional prognostic and predictive information, further aiding clinical management (Cornejo et al 2014). The strengths of MAAAs are the incorporation of multiple informative data points as well as these are typically undertaken by a single dedicated facility (Lee & Hall 2009).…”

“…Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in women worldwide. 1 It is a heterogeneous disease at the molecularegenetic and clinical levels, resulting in variable responses to existing treatment modalities. 2 Recent gene expression profiling studies have subclassified breast cancer into at least 4 molecular subtypes including at least luminal A and B, human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2)-positive, and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC; estrogen receptor [ER], progesterone receptor [PR], HER2-negative disease).…”
