The World Distribution of the Electrophoretic Variants of the Red Cell Enzyme Esterase D

Abstract: The phenotypic variation in the esterase D phenotypes among 2,405 individuals in 14 samples from populations in Europe, Africa and Asia are reported. There exists a marked difference in esterase D allele frequencies in different continental regions. Comparison of the world population data so far available shows that esterase D is another useful genetic parameter for the study of population diversity.

“…Regarding to both ESI) and PGM I, the X2 analysis for the heterogeneity within Sardinia did not show any significant dif ferences between our sample and those re ported by Floris et al [1984], Floris-Masala et al [1986], Modiano et al [1986] and Lunesu et al [1987], However a statisti cally significant difference ( p < 0.001) was found for PGM I between this study and the data reported by Floris-Masala et al [Piazza et al, 1982;Rickards et al, 1984]. However, these two genetic markers do not allow a discrimination of Sardinians from other European popula tions [Papiha andNahar. 1977: Mourant etal., 1976;Tills et al, 1983], Our findings confirm that the Sardi nian population differs from the genetic point of view from other Italian popula tions.…”

“…Our knowledge on the world distribution of these two biochemical polymorphisms still remains unequal: EsD variation has been examined in various geographical zones [15] while GLO I is concerned with a limited number of studies [3].…”
