Red Cell Polymorphisms in Sardinia

Abstract: Acid phosphatase (ACP1), esterase D (ESD) and phosphoglucomutase 1 (PGM1) polymorphisms have been studied in Sardinia and the following gene frequencies have been found: ACP1*A = 0.235, ACP1*B = 0.684 and ACP1*C = 0.081; ESD*2 = 0.118 and PGM 1*2 = 0.233. These findings confirm the genetic uniqueness of Sardinians compared to the other Italian and European populations.

“…This is corroborated by the statistical analysis of Rickards et al, 1988;Walter et al, 1989) thus indicating a considerable genetic heterogeneity of the Sardinian population. This confirms, too, the observations of Piazza et al (1985) and Ulizzi et al (1988), who investigated the distribution of numerous genetic markers on this island and showed that the genetic differentiation within Sardinia is relatively high.…”

“…As part of a joint research project on the regional variability of genetic markers in Italy, we typed four Sardinian population samples for various red cell enzyme (AcP, EsD, PGM,) and serum protein (Hp, Tf-, Gc-, Pi-subtypes) polymorphisms (De Stefan0 et al, 1987;Rickards et al, 1988;Walter et al, 19891, including Gm and Km allotypes. The results of these Gm and Km typings will be presented here, followed by a critical review of the hitherto reported Gm-and Km-data from Italy.…”
