This study aimed to implement community action-based project to help students apply knowledge of food security to the real world. The project had students involved in choosing a food security related topic, collecting data from a community, creating a data-driven action that is beneficial to the selected community, and reporting their work. To aid educators in successfully adopting a project-based learning approach in food security at undergraduate level, this manuscript explained the course framework, demonstrated students’ works, discussed benefits and challenges when employing the community project in the course. The approach described here is applicable in other multidisciplinary fields.

This practitioner research in education paper is based on the experiences of two English language educators taking part in a collaborative online international learning project, otherwise known as COIL. Synchronous and asynchronous teaching methods were used for English language learners to meet and work with students from other countries. The collaboration took place virtually between two institutions of higher education, located on different sides of the globe, namely Mexico and Singapore. Students met to work in groups on a project, in an authentic situation to practice the target language. The experience provided students with intercultural and transnational learning through interaction, collaboration and taking ownership of their learning. With little or no experience of taking part in COIL projects, the practitioners investigated three key questions: 1. What are the benefits to students of taking part in international collaboration? 2. What are the challenges of such a project? 3. How do students cope with misunderstandings resulting from cultural and ethnic differences? Data was collected through the analysis of written online learning logs using thematic coding to create a survey given to participating students at the end of the project. The benefits, as well as the challenges, are considered followed by recommendations based on first-hand experiences and reflections to offer a practical reference for colleagues and educators who may wish to explore the feasibility of taking part in such a project.

Siswa SMK masih termasuk dalam tahap perkembangan remaja, dimana pada tahap ini remaja masih mencari identitasnya yang merupakan masa peralihan dari tahap perkembangan anak menuju dewasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara kepercayaan diri dengan kesiapan kerja pada siswa kelas XII di SMK X Padang. Variabel bebas dalam penelitian ini adalah kepercayaan diri dan variable terikatnya adalah kesiapan kerja. Alat ukur yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah skala kepercayaan diri dan skala kesiapan kerja. Teknik pengambilan sampel pada penelitian ini adalah teknik probability random sampling yaitu teknik penentuan sampel diambil berdasarkan dari tabel Isaac dan Michael dengan taraf kekeliruan 10% sehingga sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 108 siswa di SMK X Padang. Uji validitas dan reliabilitas dalam penelitian ini menggunakan teknik Cronbach Alpha. Hasil koefisien validitas pada skala kepercayaan diri dengan nilai corrected item-total correlation berkisar antara 0, 308 sampai dengan 0, 831, sedangkan koefisien reliabilitasnya sebesar 0, 928. Hasil koefisien validitas pada skala kesiapan kerja dengan nilai corrected item-total correlation berkisar antara 0,325 sampai dengan 0, 817, sedangkan koefisien reliabilitasnya sebesar 0, 954. Berdasarkan analisis data, nilai korelasi 0, 447 dengan tingkat signifikansi 0,000 diperoleh, yang berarti hipotesis diterima. Hal ini menunjukan bahwa ada hubungan positif yang signifikan dengan taraf kuat antara kepercayaan diri dengan kesiapan kerja pada siswa kelas XII Di SMK X Padang. Kontribusi efektif dari variabel kepercayaan diri terhadap variabel kesiapan kerja adalah sebesar 20%.
