“…As reported in previous studies, overexpressing PUB genes negatively regulate the drought and salt stress response in some plant species, such as PUB11, PUB22, PUB23, and AtPUB30 in Arabidopsis [31,32,40], OsPUB41 and OsPUB75 in rice [24,44], GmPUB6 and GmPUB8 in soybean [27,34], and TaPUB26 in wheat [45]. In our study, overexpressing GmPUB21 shows sensitive to drought, salinity stress and ABA treatment (Figure 3), and more ROS (O 2 − and H 2 O 2 ) accumulated in transgenic plants after drought and salinity treatment, which may disturb the tolerance to drought and salt stress.…”

“…In contrast, TaPUB26 acts as a negative regulator of salt stress tolerance [ 143 ]. Here, stiff brome ( Brachypodium distachyon ) transgenic lines overexpressing this E3 ligase exhibited higher sensitivity toward salinity, which was accompanied by accumulation of ROS, and an increased Na + /K + ratio [ 143 ]. TaPUB26 interacts with T. aestivum REGULATORY PARTICLE AAA-ATPASE 2A (TaRPT2a), which functions as an ATPase subunit of the 26S proteasome complex.…”

“…TaPUB26 interacts with T. aestivum REGULATORY PARTICLE AAA-ATPASE 2A (TaRPT2a), which functions as an ATPase subunit of the 26S proteasome complex. Its gene expression is salt inducible, however the mechanism of how TaPUB26-TaRPT2a interaction affects salt stress tolerance is still not understood [ 143 ].…”

“…TaPUB26 is induced by high salinity, cold, drought and phytohormones. Ectopic expression of TaPUB26 in Brachypodium distachyon leads to a hypersensitive phenotype to salt stress, manifested by reduced chlorophyll contents, decreased photosynthetic capabilities and antioxidant enzyme activities, more ROS accumulation and severer cell membrane damage relative to the WT plants [50]. Moreover, the transgenic plants have higher Na + contents and lower K + contents following salt treatment, hence maintain a higher cytosolic Na + /K + ratio in plant cells.…”
