The Validity and Reliability of a Korean Version of the Diabetes Self-Care Barriers Assessment Scale for Older Adults with Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the validity and reliability of the Diabetes Self-Care Barriers Assessment Scaler for Older Adults (DSCB-OA) in Korean older adults with type 2 diabetes. Method: To develop Korean version DSCB-OA used translation and backtranslation method. Then, Korean version DSCB-OA was analyzed using data of 278 older adults with type 2 diabetes. Cronbach's alpha coefficient, item to total correlation and test-retest reliability was used for the reliability test, and factor an… Show more

“…Diabetes self-care activities were measured with the 25-questionnaire Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Questionnaire (SDSCA) developed by Toobert & Glasgow [18], modified by Toobert et al [19], and translated into Korean by Chang & Song [20]. When excluding questions that could not be scored, a total of 17 questions assessed the domains of diet, exercise, medication, blood glucose test, and foot management.…”

“…The translation processes were guided by Bracken and Barona (1991)'s method that included translation, blind back-translation, committee review and pilot testing for the cross-cultural adaptation of an instrument. This method has been widely used in studies on cross-cultural adaptation of an instrument for Korean (Chang & Song 2009), Chinese (Li et al 2008) and Spanish (Unruh & Lowe 2010) populations. The DSES was translated into Korean by one experienced qualified bilingual translator who had a doctorate in nursing.…”
